Bariatric Surgeries

Bariatric surgery, also known as weight-loss surgery, is a procedure that modifies your digestive system to help you lose weight. It is typically recommended when diet and exercise have not been effective or when there are serious health issues related to weight. The surgery can involve limiting the amount you can eat or reducing the body's ability to absorb nutrients, and sometimes both. While bariatric surgery can offer many benefits, it's important to be aware that it is a major procedure with potential risks and side effects. To ensure long-term success, it's crucial to make permanent healthy changes to your diet and incorporate regular exercise into your lifestyle. The following are just some of the procedures that we have at Ames.

Who is a good candidate for the procedure?

Bariatric surgery is typically recommended when diet and exercise have not been effective or when there are serious health issues related to weight.

Gastric Bypass

Gastric bypass surgery is one of the most common methods used for weight loss. During the procedure, the surgeon creates a small pouch at the top of the stomach by cutting across it and sealing it off from the rest of the stomach. This pouch is about the size of a walnut and can only hold a small amount of food, typically around an ounce. This restriction in the size of the stomach helps to limit the amount of food you can eat in one sitting. In addition to creating the pouch, the surgeon also cuts the small intestine and sews part of it directly onto the pouch. This rerouting of the small intestine allows food to bypass most of the stomach and the first section of the small intestine. Instead, food enters directly into the middle part of the small intestine. By bypassing these sections, the body absorbs fewer calories and nutrients from the food consumed. It's important to note that gastric bypass surgery is typically not reversible, as it involves permanently altering the anatomy of the digestive system. This procedure is recommended for individuals with severe obesity or obesity-related health issues who have not had success with other weight loss methods. However, it's essential to consider the potential risks and side effects associated with the surgery, as well as the need for lifelong dietary and lifestyle changes for long-term success.

Gastric Sleeve

Sleeve gastrectomy, also known as gastric sleeve surgery or vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG), is a type of weight-loss surgery that restricts food intake, leading to weight loss. It is typically recommended for individuals with extreme obesity (BMI of 40 or higher) or obesity (BMI of 35 to 39.9) with serious weight-related health problems. In some cases, individuals with a BMI of 30 to 34 and serious weight-related health issues may also qualify for certain types of weight-loss surgery.During the surgery, most of the left part of the stomach is removed, leaving behind a narrow tube called a sleeve. Food still empties from the bottom of the stomach into the small intestine as it did before surgery. The small intestine is not operated on or changed. After the surgery, individuals may lose anywhere from 50 to 90 pounds.

Gastric Band

Gastric band surgery is a procedure where a band is placed around the upper part of your stomach to create a small pouch. This pouch helps you feel full earlier and for a longer period of time, so you eat less and lose weight. The band can be adjusted by injecting liquid into it through a port under your skin. It's important to adopt a healthy lifestyle, change your eating habits, and be more active for the surgery to be effective. The surgery is performed laparoscopically, which means small incisions are made and a tube connects the band to the injection port. With the gastric band, you can have better control over your portion sizes and gradually achieve weight loss. It's a great option for those looking to make sustainable changes to their eating habits and improve their overall health.

Gastric Balloon

This non-surgical procedure is typically performed in the endoscopy unit as an outpatient procedure, which means you won't need to stay overnight in the hospital. During the procedure, you'll be given sedation to ensure your comfort. The doctor will use a thin tube, called a catheter, loaded with the intragastric balloon. This catheter is carefully advanced down your throat and into your stomach. To provide visualization and guidance, an endoscope, which is a flexible tube with a camera attached, will also be inserted through your throat and into your stomach. The camera allows the doctor to see the balloon clearly as they fill it with saline solution. The entire procedure usually takes around half an hour to complete. Afterward, you can typically go home within one to two hours, as long as there are no complications. To allow your body to adjust, you'll start with small amounts of clear liquids a few hours after the procedure. Gradually, you'll progress to a soft food diet over the course of the first week. By the start of the second week, you should be able to resume eating regular food. The intragastric balloon is designed to remain in place for up to six months. When it's time for removal, a similar endoscopic procedure will be performed. During this procedure, the doctor will use the endoscope to carefully deflate and remove the balloon from your stomach. At that point, you and your doctor can discuss whether to place a new balloon or explore other options based on your specific needs and goals.

Book a free consultation with one of our expert advisors at Ames today, in order to assess your BMI so that we make sure that the procedure is appropriate for you. As there are medical and physical limitations as to how much fat can be safely removed, the procedure may not be suitable for those who are overweight. The procedure itself is best suited for body sculpting as opposed to weight loss.

People who get breast implants with us often have some of the following procedures done too:

• Nose Job (Rhinoplasty)

Anyone who is unhappy with the way his or her nose looks or have some type of breathing problem may consider having a type of rhinoplasty procedure. The type of rhinoplasty you need will be decided by one of our surgeons. Sometimes, it is necessary to make an external incision in the fleshy part between your nostrils (Open Rhinoplasty) and occassionally from inside (Closed Rhinoplasty). There are also times when the bones and cartilage need to be operated on internally for both cosmetic and health reasons and often by straightening the septum (Septorhinoplasty). And finally anyone who has had a nose job are only suitable for Secondary Rhinoplasty.

• Arm lift (Brachioplasty)

The excess fat and skin under the arm can be one of the most difficult things to shift even after months of dieting. In such circumstances, an arm lift can be used to address this issue. By tightening the underlying supportive tissues and removing excess fat and skin our surgeons will be able to define the shape of your upper arm giving it a thinner and more aesthetic look.

• Tummy tuck (Abdominoplasty)

Some of us are left with an excess of skin around our tummy area after losing a lot of weight or giving birth. As this skin cannot be lost through exercise or diet alone, a ‘tummy tuck’ can be used to surgically remove the excess skin to give your tummy a thinner more defined look. It is important to remember that a tummy tuck is not a weight loss procedure and may not be a suitable procedure for everyone.

• BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift)

For those with less volumptous backsides and even those who just wish to make their backside more rounded and curvaceous , a BBL might just be for you. By extracting fat from other parts of your body using traditional liposuction methods, our surgeons will be able to add this fat back to your buttocks and add more shape and volume.

• Crowns

Crowns, which are also sometimes called caps, are carefully fitted sleeves that sit over an existing tooth in order to protect it from further damage or to improve your smile. Often applied as part of a root canal treatment, they can also hold together teeth that are cracked and support bridges. Not only this, they can also be used to cover and improve the look of teeth that have become discolored.

• Vaginoplasty

Vaginoplasty can take on many different forms surgically and the type of procedure you recieve really depends on your goals or medical needs and may include the reconstruction or recreation of the vaginia using a multitude of techniques. Vaginoplasty is often sought after by those who are seeking to address defects caused by birth or trauma in order to improve sexual function as well as by those who need vaginal reconstruction after undergoing radiation therapy for cancer and other conditions. Vaginoplasty is also used to help address congenital abnormailities which may have affected the development of the vagina.

• Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty - also known as labial reduction - is a form of plastic surgery that seeks to alter either the labia minora (the inner labia) or Labia majora (the outher labia) both of which are folds of skin surrounding the vulva. The procedure itself involves the shortening and reshaping of the labia by surgically removing unwanted tissue. This type of procedure is common among those who have congenital defects or experience discomfort during intercourse or simply for those who are unhappy with the physical appearance of having larger labia.

• Liposuction

As we age, lose weight or after we give birth, we may find certain pockets of fat are harder to remove than others through exercise and diet alone. Liposuction can help remove this fat by extracting it with a very strong vacuum. Outside of traditional liposuction, we also provide vaser liposuction which uses ultrasonic waves first to breakdown fat cells before extracting them. This often leads to less damage being done to the remaining tissue and thus enabling a quicker recovery time. Liposuction is a procedure which can be performed on all body parts.
